2003 to 2012 were BCS title games, 2015 to 2021 College Football Playoff finals. Scores list Saban’s team first. Data as of October 2026.

The totals: in his seven title-game wins, Saban’s teams outscored opponents 244-136. In the three losses they were outscored 112-65. Two of the seven titles, 2009 and 2020, came in unbeaten seasons.

How each of the seven rings was won

2003 season: LSU’s split title

LSU beat Oklahoma 21-14 in the Sugar Bowl, which hosted that season’s BCS title game, and finished 13-1. It was LSU’s first national title since 1958.

The AP poll crowned USC instead, so the NCAA lists 2003 as a shared title: LSU through the BCS, USC through the AP and the football writers.

2009 season: a perfect 14-0

In his third year at Alabama, Saban’s team beat Texas 37-21 in Pasadena to finish 14-0. It was his first title with the Crimson Tide and his first unbeaten season as a head coach.

2011 season: a shutout of his old school

Second-ranked Alabama held No. 1 LSU scoreless in New Orleans, winning 21-0. The opponent was the program Saban had led to his first title eight years earlier.

2012 season: back to back

Alabama beat No. 1 Notre Dame 42-14 in Miami for a second straight BCS title. The Tide finished 13-1.

2015 season: the first Playoff title

In the second year of the College Football Playoff, Alabama beat top-ranked Clemson 45-40 in Glendale, Arizona. The 85 combined points made it the highest-scoring of Saban’s 10 title games.

2017 season: a three-point finish in Atlanta

One year after losing a rematch with Clemson, fourth-seeded Alabama beat Clemson in the Sugar Bowl semifinal and then edged Georgia 26-23 in Atlanta. The three-point margin is the smallest in any of Saban’s seven title-game wins.

2020 season: unbeaten again

Alabama won the Rose Bowl semifinal and then routed Ohio State 52-24 in Miami Gardens to finish 13-0. The 52 points are the most any Saban team scored in a title game, and the ring was his last.

The rings he could have had

Clemson beat Alabama in the finals after the 2016 and 2018 seasons, 35-31 in Tampa and 44-16 in Santa Clara. Georgia won the 2021 final 33-18 in Indianapolis. Win those three and Saban would have 10.

Why two career records? The NCAA vacated five Alabama wins from the 2007 season, so his official mark is 292-71-1 against 297-71-1 on the field. The seven national titles are not affected.

SEC title rings are separate from national title rings; counting both, Saban won 11 conference crowns and seven national ones.
