By the numbers: 35 Finals games, a 24-11 record in them, and 1,176 points, or 33.6 a game (1,176 ÷ 35). His 41.0 average against Phoenix in 1993 is the highest for any player in a Finals series.
Why there is a gap between the two three-peats
Jordan retired after the 1993 title and spent the 1993-94 season playing minor league baseball for the Birmingham Barons. He returned to the Bulls for the last 17 games of 1994-95, too late to change that season’s result. Chicago won no title in 1994 or 1995. In his next three full seasons, the Bulls won three more.
He retired again after the 1998 Finals, sat out three seasons, and then played two more for the Washington Wizards in 2001-02 and 2002-03. He won no rings in Washington, so all six belong to Chicago.
Ring by ring: how Jordan closed each Finals
1991 vs the Lakers: 11.4 assists a game
The Lakers won Game 1 in Chicago 93-91. The Bulls then won four straight and finished it in Los Angeles on June 12, 108-101, with Jordan scoring 30 points and handing out 10 assists.
His series line of 31.2 points and 11.4 assists came in the same season as his second regular-season MVP. He was 28.
1992 vs Portland: 35.8 points a game
Chicago opened with a 122-89 win, and the teams split the next four games. The Bulls closed the series at home on June 14 with a 97-93 win in Game 6, and Jordan scored 33.
He also won the regular-season MVP again, his second straight season with both trophies.
1993 vs Phoenix: 41 points a game and the Paxson three
Jordan scored 55 points in Game 4, a 111-105 win, and averaged 41.0 for the series. Game 6 in Phoenix came down to the final seconds. Down 98-96, John Paxson hit a three-pointer off a pass from Horace Grant with 3.9 seconds left, and Chicago won 99-98 for a third straight title. Jordan had 33 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists that night.
1996 vs Seattle: the 72-10 season
In his first full season back, the Bulls went 72-10 and Jordan won his fourth MVP. Chicago took the first three games against Seattle, lost the next two in Seattle, then closed it at home 87-75 on June 16 with Jordan scoring 22 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists.
At 27.3 points, it was his lowest Finals scoring average, and he still won the Finals MVP. He was 33.
1997 vs Utah: Kerr’s shot from Jordan’s pass
With the series tied 2-2, Jordan scored 38 points in a 90-88 Game 5 win in Utah. Game 6 in Chicago was tied at 86 in the final minute. Jordan passed to Steve Kerr, whose 14-foot jumper with five seconds left put the Bulls ahead, and Toni Kukoc added a layup at the buzzer for a 90-86 final. Jordan finished with 39 points and 11 rebounds. He was 34.
1998 vs Utah: the last shot
Utah led Game 6 86-83 with 41 seconds left after a John Stockton three. Jordan answered with a layup, stole the ball from Karl Malone, and hit a 17-foot jumper with five seconds left for an 87-86 lead. Stockton’s last three missed.
Jordan scored 45 points in what turned out to be his final game for Chicago. He was 35, and he won his fifth MVP that same season.
