The five rings, one at a time

1996: a rookie ring after an 0-2 start

Jeter was 22 and that season’s American League Rookie of the Year. The Braves won the first two games in New York, 12-1 and 4-0. The Yankees then took four straight and closed it out 3-2 in Game 6 at home on October 26. Jeter went 5 for 20 with four walks, for a .400 on base percentage. It was the club’s first title in 18 years.

1998: a sweep of San Diego

The Padres never won a game. New York took the first two at home, 9-6 and 9-3, and won Game 3 5-4. It finished the sweep 3-0 in San Diego on October 21. Jeter hit .353 (6 for 17) and scored four runs. Third baseman Scott Brosius was named MVP.

1999: another sweep, this time of Atlanta

A rematch of 1996 went the Yankees’ way in four. The closest game was the third, a 6-5 win in 10 innings. Game 4 ended 4-1 at home on October 27. Jeter matched his 1998 line exactly, 6 for 17, and stole three bases. Mariano Rivera was named MVP.

2000: the Subway Series and his MVP

This was Jeter’s best World Series. He hit .409 with two doubles, a triple and two home runs. With the Yankees up two games to one, he led off Game 4 at the Mets’ park with a home run. He also tripled and scored in the third inning of a 3-2 win. In Game 5, his solo homer in the sixth tied the score at 2. New York won 4-2 for a third straight title.

He had also been MVP of that July’s All-Star Game. He is the only player to win both awards in the same season.

2009: ring five, nine years on

By then Jeter was 35 and had been captain since 2003. The Phillies won Game 1 6-1 in New York. The Yankees took three of the next four and clinched with a 7-3 win at home on November 4. Jeter hit .407 (11 for 27) with three doubles. Hideki Matsui was the MVP. It is the only title Jeter won as captain.

Jeter’s World Series record: 5-2 across seven appearances. Data as of October 2026.

What almost happened in 2001: Game 4 in New York began on Halloween night. Arizona led 3-1 in the ninth until Tino Martinez hit a two run homer with two outs to tie it. As Jeter batted with two outs in the 10th, the clock passed midnight. It became the first major league game ever played in November. On a full count, he homered off Byung-Hyun Kim to win it 4-3, and the “Mr. November” name stuck. Arizona still won Game 7, 3-2, so a sixth ring slipped away.

Across seven World Series, Jeter hit .321 (50 for 156). In the five he won, he hit .359 (37 for 103). In the two he lost, he hit .245 (13 for 53).

Fine print on Jeter’s ring count

Jeter is often grouped with Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada. The four do not share the same ring total. Baseball-Reference lists four titles for Posada, who did not play in the 1996 World Series. Jeter’s own count has no such question: he played shortstop in all five title Series.

He later ran the Marlins, the team that beat him in 2003, as CEO and part owner until February 2022. They did not win a title in that time.
