Bill Russell: 11 rings from 1957 to 1969

Boston won 11 of the 13 NBA titles from 1957 to 1969. Russell was on every one of those teams. The Celtics missed only twice. In 1958, the St. Louis Hawks beat them in the Finals, and in 1967 the Philadelphia 76ers won the title.

Eight of his rings came in a row, from 1959 to 1966. No team has won more NBA titles in a row. Russell, Sam Jones, and K.C. Jones were the only players on all eight of those teams.

The Celtics with 7 to 10 rings

Seven more players from those Boston teams won at least 7 rings. Sam Jones has 10, which is every Russell ring except the first one in 1957. Tom Heinsohn, K.C. Jones, Tom Sanders and John Havlicek have 8 each. Jim Loscutoff and Frank Ramsey have 7.

Havlicek is the only player with 7 or more rings who also won in the 1970s. He added titles in 1974 and 1976, years after Russell retired.

Robert Horry: 7 rings with 3 teams

Horry won twice with the Houston Rockets, in 1994 and 1995. He won three times with the Los Angeles Lakers, from 2000 to 2002, and twice with the San Antonio Spurs, in 2005 and 2007.

That is one more ring than Michael Jordan. Among players with four or more rings, only Horry, LeBron James and John Salley won with three different teams.

Six rings: Jordan, Pippen, Kareem and Cousy

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen won all six together with the Chicago Bulls. They came in two runs of three straight, from 1991 to 1993 and from 1996 to 1998.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won one with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1971 and five with the Lakers in the 1980s. Bob Cousy won six with Boston, including five in a row from 1959 to 1963.

Five rings: 13 players

The five-ring group covers almost every era. George Mikan, Jim Pollard and Slater Martin won with the Minneapolis Lakers of the early 1950s.

Magic Johnson and Michael Cooper won five with the 1980s Lakers. Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher, and Tim Duncan won theirs from 1999 to 2014.

Search every NBA champion player

The tables above stop at four rings. The search below covers every player who played in the playoffs for an NBA champion, from the 1947 Philadelphia Warriors to the 2026 New York Knicks.

That is 607 players. 435 of them won exactly one title, 93 won two, 35 won three, and 44 won four or more. Two of them share a name: Matt Guokas Sr. won with the 1947 Warriors, and his son, Matt Guokas Jr., won with the 1967 76ers.

Type any name, or filter by team or number of titles. Each gold chip is a title. Tap one to open that season in the ring race, where the card lists every player on that champion.

A title counts when the player played in that year's playoffs for the champion. For the 44 players with four or more titles, the count follows the Basketball-Reference leaderboard, which also credits teammates who were on the team but did not play in the playoffs. Gold chips are titles; grey notes show seasons a player was on a champion's roster but did not play in those playoffs. Tap a title to see that season in the ring race.

Why the top of the list is all 1960s Celtics

Two things put Boston players at the top. The first is the run itself: the Celtics won 11 of the 13 titles from 1957 to 1969, including eight in a row. The second is the size of the league.

The NBA had 8 teams in the 1959 to 1960 season. It had 30 teams in the 2025 to 2026 season. With 8 teams, each title was one of 8 possible winners. Today it is one of 30. A team now has to beat a field almost four times as large, since 30 divided by 8 is 3.75.

That does not make the Celtics rings worth less. It explains why nobody since has come close to Russell. The most anyone has won since 1970 is Robert Horry’s 7.

The dynasties behind the list

Seven title runs account for 43 of the 44 players on this list. The only one outside them is LeBron James, who won with Miami, Cleveland and the 2020 Lakers. Boston alone gave the list 13 players.

Jordan and LeBron James are the only players on this list who were Finals MVP in every title they won. Robert Horry has the most rings since 1969 without the award, with 7. Scottie Pippen is next with 6.

Since 1996, six players have won 5 titles each: Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher, Steve Kerr, Ron Harper and Robert Horry. Nobody has won more in that time.

Where active stars stand

LeBron James starts the 2026 to 2027 season with the Philadelphia 76ers, still on four rings. Stephen Curry also has four, all with Golden State. Kevin Durant has two. To reach Robert Horry at seven, any of them would need three more titles.

The 2026 title went to the New York Knicks, who beat the San Antonio Spurs four games to one. It was the Knicks’ first title since 1973. No player on that team reached four rings.

How rings are counted here

The ring tables follow Basketball-Reference, which credits a title to any player who was on the team during that year’s playoffs. A player who left the team before the playoffs is not counted for that title. Coaches and team staff are not included.

The search covers all 80 champion rosters. There, a title counts when the player played in that year’s playoffs for the champion.

Players who were on the roster that season but did not play in those playoffs are listed in a grey note under their name, and in the season card of the ring race. Injured players fall in that group, so a few totals for players with one to three titles can be one lower than the ring count their team gave them.
