Bonds stretched his streak to 4, from 2001 to 2004. Ohtani won 3 in a row from 2023 to 2025. The first came in the American League and the next 2 in the National League.

2025: both leagues repeat for the first time

Judge and Ohtani both won again in 2025. It was the first season in which both MVPs were repeat winners. Judge edged Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners, while Ohtani was a unanimous pick.

What other MVP records stand out?

Two players won in both leagues

Frank Robinson won with the Cincinnati Reds in 1961 and the Baltimore Orioles in 1966. Ohtani is the other, and he has 2 in each league.

    Two pitchers won it twice

Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants won in 1933 and 1936. Hal Newhouser of the Detroit Tigers won in 1944 and 1945, the first pitcher to win in consecutive seasons.

Four players won at 2 positions

Hank Greenberg won at first base and in the outfield, and so did Stan Musial. Robin Yount won at shortstop, then in the outfield. Alex Rodriguez won at shortstop for Texas and at third base for New York.

Do MVP awards before 1931 count?

No. MLB starts the count in 1931, when the Baseball Writers’ Association of America began voting. The Chalmers Award of 1911 to 1914 and the League Awards of the 1920s are left out.

Who would gain: Gehrig, Cochrane, Hornsby and Johnson

Rogers Hornsby1925, Cardinals and 1929, CubsNone
    Walter Johnson1913 and 1924, SenatorsNone

Players who would reach 2 if the early awards counted.

Count those 4, and 34 players would have 2 or more instead of 30.

How is the MLB MVP picked?

30 writers vote in each league

Members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America cast the votes. Two writers from each MLB city get a ballot, so 30 vote for each award. Every ballot ranks 10 players and is due before the playoffs begin.

    How the points add up

A first-place vote is worth 14 points. Second place is worth 9. Each place after that drops by 1 point, down to 1 point for 10th.

Judge won the 2025 American League award with 17 first place votes. Those votes alone were worth 238 points.

He finished with 355 points in all. Raleigh had 13 first place votes and 335 points.

The Landis name came off the plaque in 2020

The award plaque carried the name of former commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis from 1944. In 2020, 89% of the writers voted to remove it.

That year’s plaques were the first without his name.

When are the 2026 MVPs announced?

On Thursday, November 12, 2026. Rookie of the Year comes first, on November 9. Manager of the Year follows on November 10, and the Cy Young on November 11.

If Ohtani wins the National League award again, he will have 5. If Judge wins in the American League, he will have 4.

Which team has the most MVPs?

The New York Yankees, with 23 since 1931. The St. Louis Cardinals are second with 18.
