|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1903 | Boston Americans | Pittsburgh Pirates | 5-3 | 8 |
| 1919 | Cincinnati Reds | Chicago White Sox | 5-3 | 8 |

| 1921 | New York Giants | New York Yankees | 5-3 | 8 |
The four best of nine World Series. Team names as they were.
None of the four went the full 9 games. Every World Series since 1922 has been a best of seven.
The 3 World Series with a tie game
Three World Series had a game end in a tie: 1907, 1912 and 1922. In 1907 and 1922, the winner took 4 games with a tie and no losses.
The 1912 tie stretched that Series to 8 games. The Boston Red Sox beat the New York Giants 4-3. No other best of seven Series has needed an eighth game.
The 2-3-2 format and home field
The team with home field hosts Games 1, 2, 6 and 7. The other team hosts Games 3, 4 and 5. The 1943 and 1945 Series used a 3-4 setup instead, because of wartime travel limits.
Since 2017, home field goes to the team with the better regular season record. From 2003 to 2016, it went to the league that won the All-Star Game.
In 2020, all 6 games were played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. It was the first World Series at a neutral site.
Playoff rounds before the World Series
| Round | Format | Wins needed |
|---|---|---|
| Wild Card Series | Best of three | 2 |
| Division Series | Best of five | 3 |
| League Championship Series | Best of seven | 4 |
| World Series | Best of seven | 4 |
Twelve teams make the playoffs, six from each league. The top two division winners in each league skip the Wild Card Series.
A Wild Card team that goes the distance in every round would play 22 postseason games. The 2026 Brewers swept the Dodgers 4-0 in the National League Championship Series.
The longest World Series games
| Year | Game | Final | Innings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2018 | Game 3 | Dodgers 3, Red Sox 2 | 18 |
| 2025 | Game 3 | Dodgers 6, Blue Jays 5 | 18 |
| 2005 | Game 3 | White Sox 7, Astros 5 | 14 |
| 2015 | Game 1 | Royals 5, Mets 4 | 14 |
| 1916 | Game 2 | Red Sox 2, Robins 1 | 14 |
World Series games of 14 innings or more.
Both 18 inning games ended on a Dodgers walk off home run. Max Muncy hit it in 2018, and Freddie Freeman in 2025. The 2018 game ran more than 7 hours.
Postseason games use no automatic runner in extra innings, so every extra inning starts with the bases empty.
